Warwick Castle, Warwickshire

Warwick Castle, Warwickshire

History

A structure of some sort has stood on the site of Warwick Castle since around AD914, when a wooden fort was first constructed. A stone-build replacement was built around 1260 and was heavily updated and had many additions during the Tudor, Jacobean and Victorian eras.

Many people say the castle is riddled with ghosts, and with many centuries of history behind it, it seems highly likely...

Hauntings

Possibly the most freaky story to emerge from years gone by is that of a woman named Daisy, who was the Countess of Warwick at the time. She was a keen spiritualist, which wasn't uncommon durinf the mid and later parts of the 19th century.

During one of her seances in the Kenilworth Room she accidentally let a maleviolent spirit into the atmosphere... The night ended with all her guests fleeing in fear and refusing to come back. The room was even closed for several years after. Mediums still, to this day, pick up on a horrid energy and describe it as being "devil-like". Could it be this spirit that causes the masses of banging noises, and feelings of nausea?

The Watergate tower is so haunted that people actually refer to it as the "ghost tower". It's haunted by Sir Faulk Greville, who was murdered by his own servant after he discovered his master would only leave him £20 of his vast fortune in his will. Sir Faulk often comes in visitation to his master bedroom, and is apparantly quite fond of his portrait and fireplace!

And finally, many people hear the screams of a young girl in the lower chamber of Warwick Castle and see a black shadow of a small figure. Could this be the spirit of a 13 year old girl named Rosa Lee? Legend would have us believe that an older man raped her and the resulting pregnancy forced him to murder her and block her body up behind the wall.
