volco road, edgewater , Florida

by Mia
(edgewater, fl, volusia )

There has been a lot of ghost stories about this bridge on Volco road for years. Me and my friends were curious to see for ourselves to see if the stories where true. So tonight, me and my friends went out to the bridge and parked our car and turned off all the lights and shut the car off. We took a lot of pictures and they had MANY orbs on them then all of a sudden we heard this very loud, very deep scream. We left after that.. but as the stories go there was a lady who was a satanist who had her own cult, she crashed her car into a tree by the bridge. All the people in her cult as they died off joined her at the bridge.. you can see dark shadows walk across the road but when you turn your lights off there is nothing there.. you can also hear the witch scream and laugh at night.. best time to go is at 12am...

Just Visited NEW
by: Anonymous

Volco Road has been a topic of discussion between various friends of mine for ages, one of my long time friends was very interested in the dark story behind it and her and i visited a year or two ago with no results of any "witch"

Me and my friends visited tonight with a Ouija board. We tried communing with any sort of "witch" or malicious spirit. nothing happened again. Went around 12 too. The supposed golden hour where the big moment where a loud blood curdling scream is heard.

We heard nothing. Just the cold wind and silence and the feeling of the hard pavement where we got out and sat on the bridge.

Yall mfs stayed in your car, me and the squad went out there and the witch never appeared.

As much as I want to say these occurences others have supposedly experienced where vehicles shut off and hand prints appear somewhere on your vehicles window after the scream. My friends and I never heard or saw anything.

However, i will say it did feel cold, dark, and empty. With a vacuum like feeling and a slight echo whenever we spoke. Which seems to be the only quality of any story i read on here that was similar. But it is an open dirt road in the middle of no where in Edgewater. Places like that tend to be such.

If I ever go again and have a different experience, i will gladly post it here. If i go again and same thing happens as this time tonight. I might as well go cycling down Volco in my birthday suit because the legend doesnt seem real.

My personal and very real experience
by: Anonymous

I really don't care if anyone believes me or not but here is my story. I lived on cow creek road less than a 1/2 mile from Volco Rd for over 5 years. In that time I experienced just about everything that is being clamed. Except for the witch (as far as I know). But the very last time I stepped foot onto that road changed my life forever. Two friends and I went for a late night walk and thought we would walk down Volco Rd because it was less traffic during that time than cow creek. We got about five feet onto the road before I got a bad feeling and decided to turn around and go home. As my right foot hit cow creek, before I even had the chance to lift my left foot off of the beginning of volco, I felt a very unmistakable hand grip my left calf nearing my ankle. When we got to the beginning of my drive way I "blacked out". All I know is still to this day I have absolutely no recollection of walking down 3/4 of my almost 1/2 mile drive way. And finally when we made it back inside I had a bruise in the exact shape and size of a smalll woman's hand. Say it's not haunted all you want. But I don't need proof from someone else to know and 100% believe what I went through that night. And ever since then my health has gone completely down hill. I'm having issues that I absolutely should not be having at age 25. Believe or not, please always be careful on that road.

I'm not agreeing nor am I agreeing with the haunting NEW
by: Anonymous

So here is a story I can share about this area.to start we have screech owls in florida they sound like a woman screaming bloody murder. And coyotes also live hear and tend to make a chuckling bark.and there's a few fox not many.but I have a family member that lives about 1/4 mi from the bridge. I had a very frightening dream of a young girl in a white victorian style gown... She was decapitated by a soldier or maybe a spanish soldier. This is something you ppl need to realize the land has been soked in native blood all the way up to the trail of tears with us1 follows. Most of the colonists that came here to settle we're paganist. And prosecuted for it. Malaria spanish flue yellow fever and tb decimated floridan population. Not to mention rabies dehydration and tetanus. To say any place in FL ain't hunted would be an understatement. It may not be the volco with it's probably just a startled screech owl or a chuckling coyote or a lost soul... but no there probably is not a satanic wich on that old dirt road. But there is definitely something odd I've had that same dream in that same house we helped build by hand on multiple occasions...

DEFINITELY NOT HAUNTED (PROOF) NEW
by: JMB

Volco Road is definitely not haunted and never has been & all the stories concocted about it are all hogwash and are untrue. As a local historian and resident of this area let me shed some clarity : Let me begin by the history of the Volco Road region.

Originally , the Timucuan Indians once roamed these lands until their time of passing. The earliest recorded record that traces back to this area dates back to 1816 , when Charles Fraser Sibbald acquired a Land Grant from Spain accumulating over 16,000 acres of land in this region. It was known as the Sibbald Grant and is still marked on present day maps. Sibbald who was a native of Philadelphia , used these lands for timber milling & cultivation. He erected mass saw mills and plantations throughout this region and was a highly prominent businessman. Problems eventually arose for Sibbald starting already in the year of 1821 , when Florida became part of the U.S. Territory. The government eventually came forward and told Fraser that the title to his lands were invalid. He suffered immense losses and most of his land was stripped from him. He filed a claim against Congress in the year of 1838 for indemnity in being dispossessed of his lands. That claim initially proceeded nowhere and he lost heavily. By the turn of 1842 Sibbald returned to Philadelphia where he remained until his death in the year of 1865.

Most of the early settlers that came next to the area , started to appear around the turn of the 1860's and 1870's. The earliest known settler in this region was , Edward Clinton , who arrived here sometime around the turn of the 1860's. Another early family to the area were the Huskey family. A small village center was establish around the turn of 1870 in the vicinity of what is now Volco Road , and was called ( Ucoma ). Ucoma was believed to be centered around the area of Volco & Liza Clinton Road's. The home of John & Liza Clinton was once nessled here but has long since vanished long ago. That community dwindled and dissolved already by the turn of the 1920's. The Clinton Family and their descendants flourished throughout this region for generations. Edward Clinton , the earliest settler , was also responsible for establishing the ghosttown community of Ariel which was eventually annexed into Edgewater. The Clinton & Huskey families owned most of this initial region at the time , including Beacon Light Road and most of the surrounding area's. Many members of the Clinton Family now rest in the Clinton Family Cemetery further to the north. Other early pioneering families also rest there. Some of their descendants still live within the area.

It was said that the original Maytown-Osteen Corridor Route had linked to Volco Road. A route was established around the turn of 1900 in the now defunct community of Cow Creek off Maytown Road that traveled east connecting with Volco Road. It was at the time , the primary artery linking transportation from east to west. The community of Cow Creek had already dissolved and vanished by the turn of 1930 and the route to and from was severed. Not a trace of that route exists today. Another neighboring community that was next to Volco Road was Creighton , which was originally a timber milling operation that was established in 1911 by E.R. Creighton. A small community flourished here briefly but dissolved by the 1930's.

The origins behind the Volco Road name are not quite known but it is believed that the name derived from an abbreviation of : Volusia ( Vol ) & County ( CO ) ; henceforth generating the name of Volco. The roads original bridge networks were erected some time around the turn of 1928. The bridges along the route were replaced in the year of 1987. A portion of Volco Road now borders the Turnbull Hammock Conservation Area.

HERE'S THE PROOF

The problem with Volco Road is the speed limit , which is relatively on the slow side and for a good reason as well as idiot people. This is a dirt road , develops rivets and can get slick after heavy rain and their are no easements. People do well over 15 to 30 MPH over the given speed limit or worse virtually 90% of the time. You can pull up a chair and sit for hours on end and virtually 90% if not all drivers are well over the speed limit and accidents occur out here all the time , at one given point their was an accident happening on Volco Road every week ! Volco Road is also a hang out for punk kids and trash , drinking booze and taking drugs and having social get togethers and only adds to the mix of idiot drivers and stupidity. Local lore as well as concocted and stupid stories about hauntings to try and sway people away haven't worked and only attributed to stupid curiosity seekers. It's only caused more problems then good. As for all the green or glowing lights in the swamps , they are all caused and generated by phosphorescent / luminescent algae. Anyone who goes out here , use caution , use your brain and drive carefully. Your more then likely to get killed driving like an idiot or get killed by someone else driving like an idiot , just best to stay off this road and especially late of the night and overnight.

The strange truth NEW
by: Ghost King

There is a dark presents over and in "Edgewater" "New Smyra" and "Oak Hill" Florida. All the missing kids and the strong drug use that goes on in the dark. Everyone that is killed or hurt on Volco Rd at some point "lose control" no matter how well they can drive they still can't stay in control. I think there may be a "force" not a "witch" on that road that causes this.

We went around midnight few friends and I. We saw a shit ton of orbs which was pretty neat but I heard the woman scream in the woods and no one else heard it until we sat there waiting for it again and sure enough that scream was clear as day.

very scary road NEW
by: Anonymous

I have driven down volco road for many many years. Growing up in new smyrna beach I heard the story of the satanic woman who died on the bridge. I hate driving over the bridge late at night to head to my aunts house who lives off those roads. Many times I've encountered eerie things. I have never been brave enough to actually turn my car off when I'm alone. I have stopped several times and put my vehicle in park due to strange sightings. The worst is when it's raining and no matter how slow you drive over the bridge i always felt like my car was being pushed off the road. The last time I went down volco road I was with a few people so we decided to stop and turn off the car. We didn't hear screams but laughter and a dark figure, the shape of a person, was standing right in front of the car. I now drive down u.s.1 and go to my aunts that way I don't have to go down volco. I won't even if it's daylight.

Marge Schneider NEW

Marge Scheider, was neither a witch nor a Satanist. She was simply a woman on her way to work. She was running late and was speeding. When she hit the railroad tracks heading east on Volvo Rd. her car went airborne and hit a palm tree, killing her instantly.

If the paragraph regarding Mrs. Schneider could be deleted her family would greatly appreciate.

Facts NEW
by: Anonymous

October 25, 1983 a woman by the name of Marge Schneider (37 years-old) hit a palm tree on Volco Rd. in Edgewater FL. and died. I do not know if she was a witch or a worshipper of satan, but I found this on page 41 of The Daily Journal, December 20, 1983 (the link below is to cite my source, but if you have to delete it I understand).

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1873&dat=19831220&id=idwpAAAAIBAJ&sjid=p9IEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2500,3310934

The night of January 5, 2007, a 19 year-old and a 22 year-old male were found dead when their Camaro flipped near the intersection of Volco Rd. and 35th St. (35th St., Volco Rd., and the train tracks all intersect in this one spot).

On April 26, 2014, two 21 year-old young men were driving at high speed and crashed shortly after midnight (12:20am), one was killed, one left critical. The accident occurred within a stretch of Volco Rd. that Google maps does not include on street view (even though both ends are mapped).

I have not been there personally, but tracing the road from street view of Google maps, this is the only area where I can imagine this bridge exists, as I cannot find it on either of the other ends. One end does turn into a dirt road right where street view stops (SW end).

Using Google maps, street view, there is a street memorial (collection of personal items, crosses and wreathes left by family) southwest of the tracks, after the first bend, just before the antenna station that is there, on the west-bound side of the road.

The road I live on ends 20 ft. from that 35th st./Volco Rd./Train Tracks intersection, but I have not had a chance to venture that way yet. I have been looking around at local haunting sites and am looking to qualify what I can before setting out to actually see if there is anything to them.

The names of the four young men involved in the two accidents mentioned above are public record, but out of respect I have not included them here. These are simply a few facts that I was able to track down about that area; I do not represent them here as evidence of anything, but I do find it a little interesting.

Never experienced anything like this NEW
by: Anonymous

Four of us drove to Volco Rd at midnight and stopped at the first bridge. We turned the headlights off and got out the car. As we started walking from the bridge, we heard a high pitched female scream from the direction of the woods. Then we ran and got into the car. One of us got out the car after a couple of minutes and we heard another scream the same pitch and sounded closer to us. A couple minutes later, a third scream sounded but further away. We quickly drove down the road and turned around. As we approached the next bridge, there was a loud violet pounding (3 times) on the roof of the car. We sped down the road and stopped the car at the first bridge again. As we sat in the car, a demonic female voice came over one of our cell phones saying to open the door again and spoke about taking our souls. We could not clearly make out the rest of what was said. After this, the cell phone shut off dead even though battery was left. We sped away and left. I have never believed in any of this and always thought these type of stories were made up, but after tonight's experience, I will never go there again. We are all terrified of Volco Rd.

I went there with two close friends last night. As we approached the bridge we were all already feeling very uncomfortable. It was exactly 12:00 AM when we turned off the car/lights and got out. As soon as we got out and took a few steps we heard a very loud scream, clear as day, come from the trees. It sounded like a woman's scream. After that we hurried to my friend's car and right as he started the car, two very bright headlights appeared directly behind us. The road is very long, so we would've seen a car approaching, but we didn't, so we floored it and got out of there. I never believed in spirits/ghosts, but now I do.

Personal Experience Halloween Night
by: Anonymous

Me and a friend went there around 1:30, the night after Halloween. It was extremely spooky just driving on the narrow, curvy road leading up to the bridge. We didn't stop or anything because it was only two of us and there was just a super eerie feeling in the air. We had windows down and slowly rolled over the bridge, listening for anything out of the ordinary but decided to leave before we took the time to find out.

I've heard rumors that there is a skull under the bridge, that you'll hear a scream, that if you turn off you car, the lady will approach you and when you try to get up and leave, your car won't start up, and if you get out and leave your keys on the hood of your car, they will be gone when you go back for them.

This is an extremely spooky place and if you go, go with friends, and not just one, many
