My mom told me this story just a couple years ago. She went to Beatrice High School and I went to Tri-County (just outside of Beatrice). In 1983 a boy named Charlie Grimille died at Beatrice High School while performing on stage. My mom said he hung himself in front of the whole audience, but I guess it was an accident. For such a small town it was a big and scary deal, but not big enough to make national headline news and I guess it was sort of forgotten. After he died, locals thought the theater was haunted. They heard noises, and there was a superstition about saying Charlie's name in the theater. My mom said she heard that in 1992 there was a substitute drama teacher who came for a couple days. They said he got sick in the theater and left early. Like four days later, his ex-wife hung herself. Weird.

But the really paranormal stuff didn't happen until just a few years ago. In 2008, there were 3 students who broke into the school at night. Why they did it is still not really known, but the next morning when police finally showed up, they were all found hung! I saw it in the Daily Sun myself and it was totally shocking, but when my mom told me the story of Charlie, I was incredibly freaked out. Most people say they committed suicide because the police didn't find any fingerprints or any evidence of an outside attacker. My opinion? The people of Beatrice were scared and tried to cover up the fact that something weird was going on in that school. Nobody talks about it there. Personally I am still confused, and I don't really believe in the supernatural, but I would be lying if I said I didn't think Charlie had anything to do with it. I pulled this picture from the Daily Sun issue on the story.

I currently go to BHS. Lights are constantly flickering on and off. Everyone knows the school is haunted, lol, guess we know the ghost's name now! Also, Gallows was written by a high school student, and the stories she states are true. Have a good day, and don't go into the theatre alone....

I've never been to this school. I don't know where the movie was filmed, but as a film maker myself, I remember that the movie started as a project that spent a low amount of money to film a freay trailer and then Jason Blum jumped on it, so I think it is trying to retell the story of Charlie. I have no Idea how he died. All we were given in the movie is that he died other than the first scene showing him dying in that accident. It just says at the end,"In memory of Charlie Grimille". I get what they mean by "The school just isn't right anymore. I go to High School in Longmont Colorado and a student went into cardiac arrest on out school's stage. I remember people saying it happened around the time I was born (2003) and before that I was totally fine with acting on that stage, but after hearing about that death, it did feel weird and some of my classmates told me freaky stories about going under the stage and stuff so...

Didn't happen in 1983, 1993, ever. And the new high school was built in 1998, clear across town. The old high school is now the middle school. No break-ins or hangings in 2008 at either school. The theater/auditorium at the middle school (where I went to high school) is NOT haunted. I was in theater and orchestra in the pit for plays. It's all a very good story, but that's all it is, a story. Believe me, you can find our town (thousands from around the country and even the world arrived here in August to watch the solar eclipse) and it is a very nice one for the most part. Every place has good and bad. But this didn't happen at all and I would like to set the record straight.

Sorry to break it to everyone who thinks this is true but its not. My mom went to school at the time this would of happened. It's a silly wise tale that they make up to scare kids. The high school that this happened at is now the middle school. I went there. It doesnt even have an auditorium. The only thing close is the community center across the street.

So here is what I’ve dug up on what I am now referring to as "The Grimille Case." I managed to get some scans of the local Beatrice paper issues from October 31st, 1983 and October 30th, 2008 (not very easy to come by I might add). First off I’d like those reading this to remember that these are my opinions and findings based solely off the facts presented in the articles. These events did happen. The connection between them is however, unknown and not entirely understood.

What I do know is that (as explained in the article) Charlie Grimille was an avid thespian. He devoted much of his own time to the school’s drama club and assisted in dozens of productions throughout his high school years. I actually looked up his parents in Beatrice and gave them a call, but they didn’t want to talk to me. Even though I was only interested in his life before the accident and not so much the accident itself, I understand their hesitation. From what I gather from other sources, theater was Charlie’s life until he lost his life to it.

After hearing other accounts of strange happenings in the theater up until the 2008 deaths, I quickly came to believe that just because Charlie was dead, didn’t mean he ever left the theater. As stated in the 83′ issue Daily Sun, "the theater simply doesn’t feel right anymore." Well of course it doesn’t feel right anymore! Something terribly unfortunate happened to a great young man who didn’t have a chance to finish one of his last high school shows. There was unfinished business and as any thespian knows, the show must go on! Again this is my theory, but theatrical superstitions have been incredibly powerful. If Charlie Grimille was a true believer in such superstitions, then why shouldn’t he be able to finish what he started?

Which brings me to the 2008 killings; which I do believe were killings and not self-inflicted cries for attention as many believe. What compelled the students to break into a school which they knew was haunted, I am not sure. Perhaps they were simply looking for a good time? Or perhaps they wanted to see for themselves if the school’s theater was home to the accused spirits. Either way, it was a bad decision which cost them their lives. But what happened to them is fairly clear in my opinion. As I said, Charlie Grimille had unfinished business. Why then would Charlie take it out on these poor kids in such a gruesome way? There are several possibilities in my opinion. 1. They stepped over the boundaries of the school, and more importantly disrupted the sanctity of the theater. 2. Perhaps one or several of the students were relatives of those who had wronged Charlie while he was alive. 3. Charlie was intended to play the hangman and was denied that role. The night he died from what I hear, he was somewhat upset that the hangman role was not fulfilled in the show.

Did Charlie come back from the grave to complete his role of the hangman? It would appear so to me. This is a case that I think will remain unsolved because there is no "person" to point fingers at. It is 100% paranormal and bizarre. My prayers go out to the families of the deceased.

I think that Charlie Grimille was a good man before this all happened. Last year I went to that school and I moved to Illinois because I saw what happened and I didn't want to be involved in whatever is still happening. I was planning on seeing the play in 2015 but was anxious when people had told me not to go to it. When Charlie died, I wanted to know what happened. I'm the type of person that researches everything. I researched what had happened and it said he died in the play. When I read he got hung, I was so scared. I was so happy I had moved out of that school. Then when I heard about the incident with Reese, Ryan, Cassidy, and Pfiefer, I was destraught. I didn't know what to do. I texted my friend who still goes to that school and told her about it and she didn't believe me at first. Then when she went to get ready for the play she saw something and sent me a picture of it. I told her that it was true and she said yeah and she is deciding that next year and she is moving here. After that day, I could never think about anything different. When I think about that school, I can only think about Charlie. Charlie Charlie Charlie.

Charlie`s death was no mistake because he was just an understudy and the person who was suppose to do the hanging scence didn't because he backed out. He was to afraid and Charlie took over. If you know any truth at all its the fact that even though it's outrageously ridiculous to believe this crap is that beatrice high school was rebuilt in 1999 on a completely different lot about 5 miles from the original high school. And if you really want you can probably find short movies of the guy pictured (Jesse Cross) and the director of the gallows (Chris Lofing) on youtube. One of those short movies was played at the theatres in beatrice. How do I know this, because 1 I've watched those short movies, 2 I have hung out with both of them and 3 I happened to graduate with both of them. And the best part is that I'm friends with them still.

I just want to say that I went to that school in 1983 through 1988. I never heard of anyone dying or being killed at Beatrice high school. I think I would have heard it since I was there across the street in junior high school in 1983. It makes a great story but it is impossible since it isn't even the same high school building. A tornado came through in the mid 90's and it took the junior high building. it was decided then that they would take the Jr High and put them in the high school building and in return build a huge school on the outskirts of Beatrice which was called Beatrice high school.So it isn't even the same land or building...The story of Charlie doesn't make sense to me..I was there and I never heard of any death. Sorry !!

So, I've read most of the comments/posts on this thread/page, and with so many people claiming to be from there, graduating from the school, some even claiming to have graduated the same year this even supposedly happened, yet of all those making these claims, there are some who claim it did, others claim it didn't; and still some claim to have been there when it happened, while others claim there was never anybody with that name.

I am currently going to Beatrice High School. My mother graduated in 86 from the high school downtown which is now the middle school, after they built the new high school east of town. My mom said that no kid died while in theater, there was no kid with this name. And I myself am definitely not scared to go into my school where none of this stuff happened. If YALL would like I could go through yearbooks from 83 and see if this kid is in there. I just hope YALL know that this was fabricated to make the movie.

If the death of Charlie Grimille took place in 1983 as you say, it would have been in the “Little Theatre” in the old High School on 5th street. The current High School and Hevelone Theatre were built many years later, several miles across town. How could the Hevelone Theatre at the new High School possibly be haunted by Charlie, when it didn’t even exist in 1983?

I graduated from BHS in 1986 and I was at this show! I know it happened. I saw it! One of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I literally remember hearing Charlie snap his neck. I heard that it was broken into a few years back as well, though I had already moved out of Beatrice by then. I don't remember hearing about the recent deaths. Scary stuff.
